Postal regulations for communication with the German colonies (1895) |
1.) Standard and Registered Letters Postcards (standard) 10 Pf.--Postcards with reply 20 Pf. Printed Matter, Trade samples and Business Letters 5 Pf for each 50 grams, with a minimum 20 Pf for business letters and of 10 Pf for Trade samples. Maximum weight for printed matter and business letters 2 kilograms, for trade samples 250 grams Registration fee 20 Pf plus postage; reply card fee 20 Pf The post offices in German East Africa, Cameroon, Togo, German South-west Africa and German New Guinea also arrange for the supply of newspapers by way of subscription. |
2.) Letters and boxes with value
The boxes with value may only contain jewellery or valuable items. Not be included in boxes of value may be letters or items which resemble in nature correspondence, valid currency, bank notes, named shares, documents and items which are by nature business letters. Insurance fee 16 Pf for each 240 Mk. |
3.) Postal money orders
German East Africa: Maximum value 400 Mk; Rate: 10Pf for each 20Mk, but at least 20Pf. The emission of postal money orders has occur with values in Mark and Pfennig. Only to Bagamoyo, Dar-es-Salaam, Kilwa, Lindi, Mohorro, Pangani, Saadani, and Tanga. Togo Territory: as above, but only to Klein-Popo and Lome.
German New Guinea: as with German East Africa. Only to Friedrich-Wilhelmshafen. During a six-week period a sender may not send more than 600 Marks to the same recipient. |

a) via Hamburg: up to 5 kg 3 Mk 20 Pf; 2 customs declarations in German |
Cameroon via Hamburg: up to 5 kg 1 Mk 60 Pf; 2 customs declarations in German. Only to Bibundi, Kribi, Kamerun (=Duala) and Victoria. Value declarations permissible up to a maximum of 8000 Marks only to Kamerun (=Duala) and Victoria. |
Togo Territory via Hamburg: as above, but only to Klein-Popo and Lome. |
German Southwest Africa Via Hamburg and Cape Town on British mail steamers: up to 3 kg 5 Mk 50 Pf. To Windhoek only. Via Hamburg direct on German mail steamers (only if specifically requested by the sender) up to 5 kg 3 Mk 50 Pf; 2 customs declarations in German. The steamers depart on an irreglar schedule only. The deoarture from Hamburg will be notified in the Official Gazette ('Amtsblatt'). |
Zanzibar Via Bremen or Hamburg on German mail steamers to Aden. Up to 5kg for each 1/2 kg 1 Mk. 2 customs declarations in German or English. |
German New Guinea Via Bremen or Naples: up to 5 kg 3 Mk 20 Pf; or 4 Mk respectively, 2 customs declarations in German. |
Samoa Via Bremen direct: up to 5 kg 3 Mk 20 Pf; 2 customs declarations in German. Only to Apia; Via Naples up to 5 kg 4 Mk 2 customs declarations in German. |
