Following the occupation of Nauru by Australian forces at the beginning of World War I, a number of German stamps were confiscated, taken to New Guinea and overprinted with the letters "G.R.I." (for Georgius Rex Imperator) and a value. These stamps were used in occupied German New Guinea, but were never used on Nauru or the Japanese occupied Marshalls.
